Apple reportedly will announce its next-generation iPad tablet during the first week of March, about a year after it debuted the current model, iPad 2.

The device, possibly called iPad 3, likely will sport a faster processor and higher resolution display, according to new leaks, with the third-gen iOS tablet being shown for the first time at a high-profile San Francisco event. The new iPad is likely to debut at traditional Apple launch venue the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, AllThingsD‘s sources whisper to them, though commercial availability is unknown.

Still, based on past timescales, a retail release around a week after the iPad is unveiled seems most likely. Rumors had previously suggested that the third-gen iPad would be shown off publicly sometime this month, but sources later changed their story and suggested March would be the most likely launch window so as to allow sales close to the big reveal.

The iPad 3 is expected to look similar in design to the iPad 2 but include a faster chip, improved graphics and a higher-quality camera. Insiders claim it'll also have a 2048x1536 Retina Display, the same resolution as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

The iPad 3 also could have twice the battery life of the current model, Business Insider reports. Leaked photos purporting to show the iPad 3 case indicate that internal components are being moved to make room for a larger battery, the website says.
